Proportion does the work here. Shelf spacing, base height and the relationship to windows, doors and existing trim decide whether a built-in reads as architecture or as furniture pushed against a wall.
The opening is almost never square, so the case has to be built to the wall and the face has to be built to the eye.
How we approach it
Because they are built for one wall, built-ins can absorb the out-of-square conditions of a real house — the face frames stay plumb while the scribes take up the difference.
We integrate lighting, outlets, adjustable shelving and concealed storage during the build, not after.
